{"id":41,"date":"2005-05-25T01:14:39","date_gmt":"2005-05-25T09:14:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.racingyachtmanagement.com\/blog\/?p=41"},"modified":"2007-12-10T01:27:50","modified_gmt":"2007-12-10T09:27:50","slug":"rolex-transatlantic-day-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.racingyachtmanagement.com\/blog\/rolex-transatlantic-day-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Rolex Transatlantic &#8211; Day 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><tt><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><font color=\"#202020\">Gone are the light<\/font><\/span><\/tt><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; color: #202020; font-family: 'Courier New'\"> <tt><span>and medium winds and the spinnaker flying we are in an area of<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>20-30 knot southerlies east of our entry into the <st1:place w:st=\"on\">Gulf Stream<\/st1:place> with gusts to 40 knots. <\/span><\/tt>The<tt><span> waves have built quickly to ten feet, with breaking tops and blown spray.<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>The boat heels over to 25 degrees making every movement slow and difficult.<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>We reef as the wind builds and change down to heavier smaller jibs. Two or three hours into the stronger winds and we are down to \u00e2\u20ac\u201c no mizzen, a double-reefed main and a storm jib \u00e2\u20ac\u201c sailing more upright and at 9-10 knots. We are again leading on handicap and have changed to 3-hour watches.<\/span><\/tt><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; color: #202020; font-family: 'Courier New'\"><\/span><span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><tt><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><font color=\"#202020\">In late afternoon the low sun came out<\/font><\/span><\/tt><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; color: #202020; font-family: 'Courier New'\"> <tt><span>behind us as we charged ahead. The spray flying from our bow reflected back<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>miniature rainbows, and we sailed in a magical tunnel of momentary color \u00e2\u20ac\u201c quite beautiful.<\/span><\/tt><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; color: #202020; font-family: 'Courier New'\"><tt><span>Life below has become messy things are getting lost, wet foul weather gear and clothes make everything damp. It is slow and awkward<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>to move food, bedding, and equipment around. It will get better when we have a lull and therefore a chance to clean up.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/tt><\/span><tt><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><o:p><font color=\"#202020\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/tt><tt><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><font color=\"#202020\">Yesterday ended with a severed spinnaker halyard stuck half in the mast and the other one jammed. A combination of judicious jiggling by several people and the<\/font><\/span><\/tt><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; color: #202020; font-family: 'Courier New'\"> <tt><span>day's slamming speed allowed the bike chain and halyard to be pulled out and freed the other one which is still up the rig.<\/span><\/tt><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; color: #202020; font-family: 'Courier New'\"><\/span><span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><tt><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><font color=\"#202020\">While other boats in this race eat<\/font><\/span><\/tt><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; color: #202020; font-family: 'Courier New'\"> <tt><span>freeze-dried food our meals would do a fine restaurant proud \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the boat weighs 55 tons so the added weight of real food is not considered too much of a handicap. Dinners have been beef tenderloin stew, chicken<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>breasts stuffed with artichoke hearts, pasta primavera with hot sausage, and<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>tonight's beef tenderloin with potatoes gratin. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/tt><\/span><span><o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><tt><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><font color=\"#202020\">The weather analysis<\/font><\/span><\/tt><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; color: #202020; font-family: 'Courier New'\"> <tt><span>predicts another two days of this fast sailing. We have cut through a<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>meander of the <st1:place w:st=\"on\">Gulf Stream<\/st1:place> but will reenter it on Thursday again increasing our speed over ground.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/tt><\/span><tt><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><o:p><font color=\"#202020\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/tt><tt><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><font color=\"#202020\">Lessons learnt:<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/span><\/tt><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\" style=\"margin-top: 0in\">\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; color: #202020; tab-stops: list .5in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><tt><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">Using bike chain works great to mouse halyards especially at the dock however, it should be electrical shrink wrapped so as to keep it straight and not allow it to kink and possibly wrap around spreader bars in the rig.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/tt><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gone are the light and medium winds and the spinnaker flying we are in an area of 20-30 knot southerlies east of our entry into the Gulf Stream with gusts to 40 knots.
