For the preceding four hour watch, the<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>boat averaged almost exactly 12 knots in 20 knot air, heeled over under<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>spinnaker, staysail, full main and full mizzen to seize the wind. This is<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>about maximum speed in flat seas.<\/span><\/tt><\/p>\n<p><tt><span>There are 143 miles left to the final finishing line at the Needles, the<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>western point of the <st1:place w:st=\"on\">Isle of Wight<\/st1:place>. Weather forecasts show the wind becoming<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>lighter overnight, the strengthening again in the afternoon. This may hurt<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>Tempest's lead after her two closest competitors, Selini and Whisper, finish<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>ahead of her, but Tempest is now projected to hold most of her lead on<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>handicap. Her ETA at the Needles is estimated for midday Monday, tomorrow.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/tt><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; color: #202020; font-family: 'Courier New'\"><br \/>\n<tt><strong><span>Almost There<\/span><\/strong><\/tt><\/p>\n<p><tt><span>After passing <st1:place w:st=\"on\">Lizard Point<\/st1:place>, Tempest has stayed in decent wind and averaged<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>around seven knots toward the finishing line at the Needles, ninety miles<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>away.<\/span><\/tt><\/p>\n<p><tt><span>Everything is focused on the finish and the end of the race. We are jibing<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>downwind for the better wind offshore. We passed <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:city w:st=\"on\">Plymouth<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> and Start Point<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>against a strong tidal current. We are under strict orders from the<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>navigator not to be sucked up into <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:placename w:st=\"on\">Lyme<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st=\"on\">Bay<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>, where Tempest and the wind will<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>die.<\/span><\/tt><\/p>\n<p><tt><span>Whisper has lost another twenty miles to us, and Selini is not gaining. The<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>wind will almost die at dawn as a new front arrives from the north. We will<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>beat into the wind for the last few hours. We will have eighteen hours after<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>Selini finishes to hold our handicap, but should finish by noon local time<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>to claim our prize.<\/span><\/tt><\/p>\n<p><tt><span>We are aware that we are doing everything for the last time. Last dinner.<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>Last look at ''Band of Brothers.'' For my Black Watch, probably midnight<\/span><\/tt> <tt><span>will start our last four-hour duty.
