Visbility returns as Phytoplankton recedes

Diving in Hangar Cove - from JJ
This is a picture taken at the height of the Phytoplankton bloom in the summer.

Fossil dive 2010 052

And this is a picture taken last week at Rose Gardens where the visibility was in the region of 150 feet. It was stunning.

The girls doing CTD say there is basically no phytoplankton really in the water anymore. Bad for the wildlife that feeds off it but good for us divers 🙂

Professor Peck who spent 2 months down here this year diving with us wrote a very interesting paper on phytoplankton see the press release.

  1. My husband and I have just returned from holidaying in the Bay of Islands in New Zealand. There we met Anita and Bill who were part of the commodore rally onboard Shard. Our friend Linda Brady gave a talk to the visitors, Anita & Bill included, and they kindly asked us to join them & their friends for dinner on Shard. One of the other guests, John , had prepared boeuf bourgoinne??? We had a great evening and a good deal of wine was consumed. Anita asked me to send you a message and say that we had dined together, they are very well, enjoying NZ and heading to Rotorua for a few days to explore the countryside. She sends her love and I got a lovely hug for sending you this message.

You sound like an amazing lady on an extrordinary mission, I loved reading your blog. Safe travels back home.

  2. Thank you for that message. We are now rolling and rocking home on the RRS Shackleton at 65S the time south went so very fast. I hope to spend more time south in the next few years – we shall see – so many more adventures to do in life.

    Glad you enjoyed the blog
