Yet more snow

August 3, 2011

We got yet more snow last night and today the wind gust over 50 knots. Unfortunately this made the snow slabby so the sking wasn’t great today however, the skinning was a hard workout as the tracks were covered by the wind driven snow on our return.

Rob made the track to Grytviken and I made it back. The pancake ice covers the beach at low water in this picture and as you can see there is sun over there so each lunch time I try to migrate to the sun at Grytviken.

Yesterday I did a bunch of small jobs I have been meaning to do for a while. I made and installed a bracket for one of the lifebouys over at Tijuca jetty at Grytviken as well as making a throwline bag for each of the bouys.

As it was going to snow again I shovelled all the snow off the jet boats so they wouldn’t become overloaded and installed a new anode holder on one of them.

Other than that I have been in the chippy shop making a tool for Ali’s science that he will be doing again in the spring time and a birthday present for someone on station.

  1. Hiya
Well, I must admit this looks more like the winter I was expecting you to get. Maybe Ali will get the photo I want him to do if you get some good drifts round the buildings!

I would expect the pancake ice in the bay to be picturesque if the light is right, but it looks as if your side of the bay is getting no sun at the moment. Enjoy what you can of it whilst it lasts:-)

The film is a cracker, well done all of you. I had to send the link round to various friends as it is such fun – really Brilliant!

  2. Thanks re the film everyone made a great team effort and it was good fun. The other stations films are on that blog site but we haven’t watched any as we were waiting till Ali got back from the krill boat and they are taking a long time to download. It will be interesting to see everyone elses. Today is white the sky and ground and blowing snow again unfortunately no sun or blue sky like yesterday. The ice is quite beautiful in sunlight like you say but at the moment it is fully covered in a layer of blowing powder. I am off for a weekend camping tomorrow hopefully on the other side of the Thatcher so am hoping the weather brightens up a touch however, at the moment it is meant to be windy and stay in the minus temperatures.

  3. We want your weather Ashley says 34degrees in Bermuda!!! x mum and dad
